The Mom Report: May 22, 2018
MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND
Memorial Day is this coming Monday, May 28. If you are looking for festive yet meaningful ways to mark the holiday with your family here are some great ideas.
SUNGLASSES a must FOR YOUR KIDS
Sunglasses don’t just look cool, they are incredibly important in protecting our eyes from sun damage. This is especially true for children since their eyes don’t have the same ability as adults’ to protect from UV radiation. Check out The Mom Report’s interview with Prevent Blindness NC for everything you need to know about protecting your little one’s eyes, even if they refuse to wear sunglasses!
the mother of all mother's day gifts
When it comes to Mother’s Day gifts, Denver momma Kimberly Melgar may have hit the motherload. Her husband gave her this bright, yellow, industrial super-duty mop bucket for her very first Mother’s Day!! She then posted a pic of the epic gift on Facebook to give other moms a good laugh (laughing emoji). Kimberly tells The Mom Report that she actually found it hilarious even though she really would have prefered a trip to the salon! Thank goodness she has good sense humor!
TEEN VIDEO GAME ADDICTION
If you have a teen in your house, then you’re probably very familiar with addicting games like Fortnite. While video gaming is a pretty standard teen hobby, doctors are seeing an increase in addictions to these games, which is cause for concern.
BOTTOM LINE: If you notice your child spending 8-10 hours or more gaming (daily), sacrificing sleep, not caring about school, and/or becoming disconnected from friends and family then experts say it’s time to intervene because an unhealthy addiction to video games may be in the works.
AIRLINE BREASTFEEDING CONTROVERSY
“How many boobs do you have?” That’s what traveling mom Kelsey Meyers says an American Airlines supervisor yelled at her as she was trying to board a plane with her carry ons, breast milk cooler, and breast pump. The gate agent said she had too many bags to board the plane. After an embarrassing argument about the airline policy with the agent and a supervisor, Meyers says she checked her bags even though she was clearly not breaking any rules. The airline later apologized and offered her compensation.
BOTTOM LINE: It’s stressful enough for traveling mamas. It clearly states on the American Airlines website that “[d]iaper bags (1 per child), soft-sided cooler bags with breast milk, child safety seats, strollers and medical or mobility devices don’t count as your personal item or carry-on.” This is a simple policy that all employees and we as moms should be aware of.
MOSQUITO AND TICK SAFETY
Tis’ the season for ticks and mosquitos. The number of Americans affected by flea, tick, and mosquito-borne infections has more than tripled in recent years. Just in time for summer, health officials want to make sure we are taking the proper precautions to protect our families.
BOTTOM LINE: While these pesky bugs are a part of life for any family spending time outdoors, there are some things we can do to minimize the risk of bites. Here is a great list of some simple ways to protect you and your family from fleas, ticks and mosquitoes this summer.
INVISIBLE WORK OF A STAY AT HOME MOM
“It’s time we stop grading mothers on the cleanliness of their home and start valuing them for their selfless investment in others.” If you need a reminder of how remarkable and valuable your work as a mom truly is, give this fantastic article from Motherly a quick read.
THE SWEETEST THING
If you could squeeze all the sweetness in the world into one video, this would be it. The magical bond between newborn twins here will make you want to smile and cry at the same time!
Make it a great day and remember YOU are a great MOM!
